Shompole Wilderness
Shompole Wilderness is a small, tented camp, located deep in the south of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Situated between Amboseli National Park and the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve, guests have access to over 250,000 acres, in an area with very few other tourists. The stunning colours of Lake Magadi and Lake Natron, filled with vast numbers of Lesser and Greater Flamingos, make this one of the most unique and photogenic destinations in Kenya.
The camp is family and owner-run and can only be booked on an Exclusive Use basis. This ensures that your stay is personal, private, and entirely at your own pace! There is a pool and plenty of space to relax and enjoy your surroundings in camp, as well as a wide range of activities on offer to keep the whole group entertained.
Shompole offers the chance to experience nature both in and out of a safari vehicle. Activities include day and night-time game drives, bush walks and runs, tubing, kayaking, and fishing in the Ewaso Ng’iro River. It is also one of the few places in East Africa where you can walk with habituated baboons. Community and conservation are a huge focus and interactions with the local Maasai are extremely genuine. You may find yourself helping them herd their cows or even trying your hand at milking! Scenic helicopter flights also come highly recommended … low-level, doors-off flying over the lakes is an experience you’ll never forget!
All of the Big 5 can be found in the area, with the exception of rhinos, and the diverse ecosystem brings with it a variety of nocturnal wildlife, as well as over 450 bird species.
